Storyboard + Illustration

The story of an uncommonly gentle man.

This is a redesign of the opening credits to the American fantasy romance film, Edward Scissorhands in a 12 frame storyboard form. All of the illustrations are digital and meant to give the appearance of cut paper, paying homage to the great Saul Bass; with a nod to theme of the movie itself.

The original title sequence to Edward Scissorhands is a montage of close ups in the dark and eerie castle the film begins in. Black and blue tones color the mood and provide a stark contrast to the colorful world we are later introduced to. While the title treatment does a good job with mood, it is the most forgettable part of the film, and only reflects the origins of the protagonist, not their journey.

Saul Bass posters use simple geometric shapes and symbolism; the slideshow shows inspiration for the project and features strong examples of the look I was drawn to. I wanted to apply a similar minimalist treatment to the title sequence of this cult classic film, with timeworn textures. Chicken scratch below shows some preliminary sketches for the storyboard.
